When self-hosting is worth the operational overhead

Self-hosting is a trade: more control over the environment in exchange for more responsibility for the environment.

A self-hosted system may be justified by data handling requirements, network isolation, predictable costs at a known scale, or a need for a service that hosted providers cannot configure appropriately.

If the requirement is only a preference for control, start by identifying the specific control that is missing from the hosted option. That usually produces a better technical decision than adopting an entire operating burden.
